Teaching 101

Teaching 101 is designed to help students become more comfortable in teaching a class or lesson, or in giving a speech.

  • Module 1: Introduction to Teaching & Communication. Overview: Students will learn what makes an effective teacher or speaker, the differences between teaching, presenting, and facilitating, and review course expectations and goals.
  • Module 2: Understanding Your Audience. Overview: Students will explore how to analyze learners based on age, background, and prior knowledge, and how to adapt content to meet diverse needs, including considerations for inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Module 3: Overcoming Fear & Building Confidence. Overview: Students will examine the causes of public speaking anxiety and practice strategies to build confidence, including mindset shifts and techniques for managing nerves.
  • Module 4: Basics of Lesson Planning. Overview: Students will learn how to structure an effective lesson, including writing objectives, organizing content, and managing time within a class session.
  • Module 5: Writing Clear Learning Objectives. Overview: Students will develop skills in writing measurable learning objectives using frameworks such as Bloom’s Taxonomy and aligning objectives with instructional activities.
  • Module 6: Instructional Strategies & Teaching Methods. Overview: Students will explore a variety of teaching methods, including lecture, discussion, group work, and active learning, and learn when and how to use each effectively.
  • Module 7: Creating Engaging Content. Overview: Students will learn how to design engaging instructional material using storytelling, examples, analogies, and strategies for simplifying complex concepts.
  • Module 8: Effective Use of Visual Aids & Technology. Overview: Students will develop skills in designing clear and effective visual aids, including slide presentations, and learn how to integrate technology to support learning.
  • Module 9: Classroom Presence & Delivery Skills. Overview: Students will practice effective delivery techniques, including voice control, pacing, body language, movement, and building connection through eye contact.
  • Module 10: Asking Questions & Facilitating Discussion. Overview: Students will learn how to ask effective questions, encourage participation, and facilitate meaningful classroom discussions while managing silence and varied responses.
  • Module 11: Classroom Management Basics. Overview: Students will explore strategies for establishing expectations, maintaining a positive learning environment, and handling disruptions in a classroom setting.
  • Module 12: Assessing Learning & Giving Feedback. Overview: Students will learn how to assess student understanding through informal and formal methods and provide constructive, actionable feedback.
  • Module 13: Adapting on the Spot (Flexibility in Teaching). Overview: Students will develop skills for thinking on their feet, responding to unexpected challenges, adjusting lessons in real time, and managing time constraints.
  • Module 14: Practice Teaching Sessions (Microteaching). Overview: Students will plan and deliver short lessons, receive peer and instructor feedback, and reflect on their teaching performance to improve.
  • Module 15: Final Teaching Demonstration & Reflection. Overview: Students will complete a capstone teaching presentation, evaluate their growth, and create a plan for continued development as a teacher or speaker.
